I’m not sure about Exchange 5.5. For Exchange 2000 and 2003, OWA is not needed. The DAV protocols are supported without OWA.
And since the 11.2.5 (I think that’s the one) update, signed and encrypted email does work on the Intel Macs.

Perhaps I was thinking OWA was a requirement for Entourage to connect to Exchange 5.x (which we still use)

Entourage doesn't require OWA. It can use it, but doesn't require it. Entourage works just fine directly connected to an Exchange server.
