This only shows how Virginia is more enlightened than Maryland ---
Tysons Corner, Pentagon City and Clarendon Apple stores all give the
same employee discounts on all products --- Apple HW, SW and 3rd
party products as the online store. You just need to move to
Virginia.
(For those in the DC area, the first line is a joke. Virginia is
MUCH more conservative than MD :-)

I used to work at one of those stores.... The Federal discount is indeed
only good for hardware in the store, not software. They do charge
different prices for ram vs. the online store. One annoying thing was
that they only stocked boxed ram and stock machines. If someone wants 2
gigs of ram, they have to sell them a stock machine, boxed ram and the
labor to open the machine up and swap the ram. The customer is then left
over with the ram that came in the machine in the first place.... I am
assuming the reason for this is to keep SKUs to a minimum. Sometimes the
price for ram was reasonable, sometimes it was way out of line.
I find much the same problem online. I just bought a new Macbook
yesterday. Via the online store, to upgrade the ram to 2 Gig (2 1 gig
667 Mhz DDR2 SODIMMS) was $500. If I shopped around online, it was $200.
I got the machine stock and will upgrade the ram later. Strangely, if
you look online at the price to upgrade the machine to only 1 gig, the
price was a very reasonable $100.
As for the attitude of the person you encountered, he is correct - that
is just the way it is and your choice is to take it or leave it. I
wasn't there, so I'm not sure how his tone of voice was. It was my
experience that retail customers falsely believe that store employees
have some ability to affect change. Apple store employees have the same
price setting ability that other retail employees have - which is to say
none. Same thing goes with the store manager. If it bothers you - you
may try writing to Apple corporate or try to contact the regional
manager. That is where prices are set.

Hi All,
Couple of questions. The Annapolis, Md., Apple Store says that Apple
software is not eligible for the Federal discount in the store, that
it must be ordered online. Is this true, or does the store's
personnel need some training?
Also, they wanted to charge $600 to upgrade a new 20" iMac to 2GB RAM
at the time of purchase, while online Apple only charges around $260.
What gives? Are they really ripping people off that much in the
stores? (We won't even talk about the "oh well, that's just the way
it is, take it or leave it" attitude of one of the sales people there).
