Title: SCR331 works with iBook, not Powerbook
I am new to this forum, so please excuse me if I ask anything that is "common knowledge".
I have an ActivCard reader that I am trying to use to get my NMCI email (https://webmail.nmci.navy.mil). Several months ago, we tried hooking it up to my wife's PowerBook using the ActivCard Gold software that I found at a SPAWAR site. It actually connected… once. It never worked after the first time. So we hooked it up to a PC laptop where it's been working for the last several months.
The on-board ethernet on the PC has been flaky, so I searched the web and found this list and decided to try it on the Mac again. I downloaded and successfully upgraded the firmware to version 5.18. The first thing I tried after updating the firmware was to hook it to my iBook, running 10.4.2. Plugged it in, launched Safari and went to the NMCI webmail address, typed in my PIN and login, and I was in. It works great with both my CAC and my wife's CAC.
Then I decided to try it on her PowerBook. Remember, this laptop had the ActivCard Gold software loaded at one time. I deleted every trace of it that I could find. So I plugged it in, launched Safari and went to the NMCI webmail address. Got a page saying I couldn't access that page. Her PowerBook was running 10.4.3 at the time, so I upgraded to 10.4.5. Still no dice.
One thing I did notice. When I plug in the reader to the iBook and insert my CAC, the light on the unit starts flashing. When I do it on the PowerBook, the light doesn't flash. I checked the Activity Monitor and verified that pcscd does indeed start up as soon as I plug in the reader on the PowerBook. I even tried it on both USB ports. Same result.
Any ideas why it doesn't seem to be working on the PowerBook? I am hesitant to upgrade my iBook for fear I won't be able to access webmail anymore. And my wife really wants to use her PowerBook instead of my iBook. Can something be left over from the ActivCard software I installed? Is the version of the OS the culprit? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
