In one case when I tried to open the trash can, the window manager
reset (screen went all blue and then reappeard with all windows
closed). The trash can window never opened and indicated trash still
in it.
In the other case, the trash can window open but didn't have anything in it.
I tried the option-empty and secure-empty --- no luck. I never tried
the unix command because when I looked in it (from a terminal window)
it was empty.
I never got the beachball-of-death or kernel panic.

When you say it locks, do you get a pin-wheel or a kernel panic
where you get a message on your screen saying the system has crashed?

This happened to me on two computers I upgraded to 10.4.8. I
managed to restore one to the proper state by doing an
archive/install. But that didn't work on the other one. On the
second one I'm afraid I have to save my files, and do a
reinitialize of the HD --- then a new install.
I called AppleCare on both (a few weeks ago) and they couldn't
figure it out (except for suggesting running disk utility --- which
didn't help --- and the archive/install --- which only helped on
one).
