Has anyone worked with MXI Security's Stealth MXP flash drives or
Outbacker MXP hard drives? I'm evaluating them as part of NHGRI's
efforts to get secure external storage, as these are both FIPS
140-2 certified. So far, they work fine on the Mac I'm testing them
on with one problem: I can't format them as anything except FAT32.
Needless to say, I'd like to try to format them as HFS+, but Disk
Utility chokes with an I/O error every time. Anybody dealt with
this before and can tell me how to fix it?

Chances are there is no way around this. Many USB flash media devices
force FAT32.
