The laptop I'm having trouble with is running Virex 8.6 build 232, and
has always been set to "On Write". Virex seems to run fine so I
begin to doubt that it is corrupted.
Every time FileVault was created under OS X 10.5.1, I'm not aware of
the option to change the format for FileVault.
It seems that perhaps the freeze happens only when the laptop is not
connected to a network -- I'm trying to monitor the laptop today using
top via ssh and I have all the standard user's application running and
I can't get it to fail. The network today is only a direct connection
to another laptop so I don't have a ssh connection on the open network.
It there a way to disable the ePO stuff? It seems to be running and
filling the console logs even though we install Virex as stand-alone.
It begins to seem that the cause is ePO?

No. In Preferences, we set "Scan Files" to "On Write". We have found
setting it to "Always" can cause lockups.

Do you have any exclusions set for Virus Scan? I've tried excluding
/Users, /var/db and /var/log

Yes, I'm using FileVault and VirusScan 8.6 build 232. This was a

the
VirusScan corruption when I tried to run VirusScan from the
Applications
folder. It would not start up. We are also using ePO 3.0. I don't
know what caused the corruption, might have been ePO.

Are you using FileVault with your account, and what build of VirusScan
8.6? I've been working with McAfee for an answer to this problem,
since
we're having it too, but I haven't been able to find a fix for it.
I'm using 10.5's FileVault format (it's different from 10.4's) and
Virus
Scan 8.6 build 234.

I had the same problem on a MacBook Pro. My notebook started freezing
when I first used it in the morning. I found that VirusScan 8.6 was
corrupted. I re-installed it and the problem has not occurred again.

How many people are using FileVault with 10.5.1 on Intel machines.
We have some type of freezing problem. At the moment I suspect third-
party software but my suspects are limited to Cisco VPN, Office 2004,
McAfee 8.6, and Parallels. I haven't totally inventoried what the
user installed but he hasn't had the machine very long at all.
In theory one of my security configurations could have an effect but I
don't see how as they all seem rather minor.
Laptops without FileVault running is a scary thought.
