My impression is that Apple management feels that a delay in 3rd party products is worth it to keep new product releases secret. They may even be correct--the consumer market is definitely driven by the "oh, new and shiny!" effect.
I do sympathize with them on this (I can't talk about what I'm currently working on for similar reasons), but it makes it tough to plan around for both customers and 3rd party developers. Folks like Dave and Shawn get caught in the middle, I expect.
