In my group, we're removing and crushing all disks, rather than deciding
which disks must be cleared vs destroyed, baby-sitting multi-hour disk
clearing processes, and keeping track of which disks are cleared and which
are not.
You can use an NSA approved disk crusher like this:

We use this press for 97% less cost:

Similar presses are available from many sources, but the 20 ton spec is
important - we tried smaller presses, disks are surprisingly tough.
You also need gloves, safety glasses, and a sturdy bag for each disk so the
pieces don't go flying, e.g.

You can quickly confirm the crushed/not-crushed status of each disk drive.
You can recycle the crushed drive through a variety of third parties.
You could destroy disks with sledge hammers, thermite, and other
weapons-of-disk-destruction, but this method is cheap, simple, relatively
safe, fun, works on any disk drive, and requires very little training.
If you don't like your Mac clearing software options, look at this:

The Pro model offers multi-pass clearing. I believe similar devices are
available from other sources.
We don't handle any classified information. YMMV.
