Be careful not to misrepresent the issue....
There is currently (10.5.0-10.5.2) a very specific issue between some
of the newer Smart Cards (T=1 / Block Transfer) with very specific
Smart Card Readers (SCM SCR 331, 531, 3310, 3311).
Combination with a different reader or a different card work as
expected.
* There are many *different* CACs issued
* There are many *different* Smart Card Readers available.
It is best not to make sweeping statements about things that don't
work to avoid misrepresenting the facts to the readers of this list.

I also work on Redstone and the DOIM supplies the user with the SCR331
and I have never been able to get my CAC working with the version of the
exchange server they use on Redstone or with any of the applications
that require authentication. Not even sure they will even let the user
determine what kind of reader they use. Course there a large number of
users on Redstone and I can see where the IT folks may want a standard
config.
Just waiting and hoping something gets done before all the Macs on our
post go away.
FYI Back in the early 90's there were over 2000 Macs on Redstone.
