You can disable the specific USB drivers for these elements. Even if you physically disable the camera (disconnect) to me this still gives you a false sense of security, as would disabling the drivers. Most people who have the time to install something, giving them access to your camera, would also have the knowledge to take your laptop apart quickly and re-connect the camera, without the LED light. The same goes for the microphone which is much easier to manipulate. The only thing that disconnecting protects you against in my mind, is remote exploits. For security, I'd always place a dark sticker over the camera. This ensures that you can visibly guarantee that you aren't being watched.
My big concern would be the microphone. For fun I actually wrote an app back in the day that let me remotely listen to the audio of my mac through the internet as a quicktime stream. It would be very easy for someone to create a hard to detect, audio recorder.
The only solution that comes to mind, is disconnecting the hardware, them putting a special "safety" sticker across the seam of the case. If someone pulled the sticker off it changes, color, or leaves nasty silver "void" on the case.

Okay,
We are looking at getting the air onto our site , but we are running into a snag from our vendor when it comes to the camera. The ability to disable it has become a issue, do to the bezel thinness, and the integration of the camera into the display connector amongst other things. I was hoping those who read this could give me insight as to how you are handling the air and its camera.

In some places, there at least used to be the option to simply have an
Agency approved sticker that is placed over the camera aperture. Its
a very sticky little mylar cover that can easily be seen and
completely eliminates all light transmission through to the camera.
For large runs, Apple federal *may* be able to provide assistance by
eliminating the camera..., but I suspect that will likely be a third
party issue.

anyone know the rationale for their site's camera restrictions? it
seems to me that, from a security perspective, microphones are (at
least?) as risky as cameras, yet nearly every laptop has one of those
installed and enabled.

maybe i shouldn't say this too loudly. i just remembered one time,
while stationed on the USS Valley Forge, i asked why mooring lines
had rat guards but the shore power cables didn't. you can guess what
went on the shore power cables next time we pulled in.
