I've actually had horrible problems with the xlxs format and compatibility. Other users on Windows or OS X cannot open files and Microsoft's own converter is unable to convert the files to anything usable. Ironically, Apple's Numbers app seems to be able to create more compatible xls files than Microsofts own Excel.
