Greetings Bob,
If they are using the reasoning that it is not on the NIAP 'Evaluated
Products List', you may have a tough time justifying *any* web browser
since, and someone please *correct me* if I'm wrong, web browsers usually
are patched and modified frequently (some *infinitely* more than others) and
if they went through the cost and time to have a version certified, it would
be non-compliant as soon as you patched it. Instead, web browsers such as
Safari (as well as Internet Explorer), is considered to be part of the
Operating System (i.e. Mac OS X 10.3.6), which in itself is EAL certified (I
call it 'Creative Compliance'). :)
In this case, I assume you are referring a version of Safari installed on
your Microsoft Windows PC, in which case you will have to go through some
sort of '5 steps to Kevin Bacon' flow diagram to show that it IS approved as
part of the Mac OS X OS, or see if you can get local DAA approval (good luck
with that one). For what it's worth, you 'could' point out that Firefox
(version 2.x - not sure which) isn't on the approved 'Evaluated Products
List', however the DoD PKI authorities (RAs, LRAs, and TAs) heavily use
Firefox to manage the DoD PKI infrastructure (I think the AF may have even
sent out a memo recommending or mandating it).
Well, I hope *some* of this info helps you and hope you have better luck
with it than I have. Last time I dealt with a 'Mac' issue with a service, I
got the response "... We don't support Macs...", even though I was a regular
internet user trying to send email to people within the service and their
email server was just eating the email without any notifications (I was a
Mac user sending email with Entourage... Hmm... Will you get this email?).
:)
Anyways, sorry for the rambling/venting. I sometimes get frustrated, having
dealt with similar issues, and when other people come across them...well....
my fingers keep typing as if they had their own mind. :)
Mark
