Problem resolved: it was operator error!
I'd forgotten to attach the card reader before mapping the module.

Did you paste or type in the path to the module file location into the
"Module filename:" field rather than browsing to the file? There is
a known bug in the Mac version of Firefox that the browse function
fills that with field with garbage and results in the "Unable to load
module" if attempted.
