Same with PGP/GPG. I think there is also a Firefox extension for GPG
in Gmail.

Try it with a smartcard. ;)
I've discussed this shortcoming with the authors and the only thing
they think they can do is implement the addon in C instead of
Javascript. This will obviously limit portability. I volunteered to
help but haven't heard back.
FWIW, Gmail is fine with S/MIME if you use IMAP or POP.
