For me, the secret to getting my battery life back (3GS) was to dial
email down from push to fetch. Something wrong in the Exchange
ActiveSync stack?

There is certainly a lot of complaints about the battery life
following 3.1, and Apple is taking it seriously. They have even
distributed a special questionnaire to a sample of users who have
reported problems as well an application called "Battery Life Logging".

Interestingly, Question 10 is "When you notice a power drop, does it
seem to be a legitimate power drop, or rather an issue with the
battery icon indicator?"
I have certainly noticed this. When I reboot my iPhone (which I do
about once a day -- under 3.0 this seemed to help with accessing the
network over AT&T), or when I switch between 3G and Edge (as I did
today), the battery life indicator can change dramatically.
I have also experienced much worse battery performance since upgrading
to 3.1 the other day, so I've started some of my own experiments. My
hypothesis is that the problem is either in the 3G protocol stack or
the Mail application because often when I check mail, the spinning
progress indicator seems to go on forever now and this even causes
weirdness when shutting down my iPhone.
For my first set of experiments I've decided to keep 3G up but
shutdown both Mail accounts (Mobile Me and an old POP account). After
a day or two of testing I'll reverse this and shutdown 3G and re-
enable the Mail accounts. If I find any differences, I'll post them
here.
