Keeping on tech issues, here:

Yes, spam may appear to come in as a text message...if you don't restrict how SMS messages can come in, but where it's coming from is someone (usually randomly) emailing email@hidden, not by actually texting you. That's why you turn that capability off, as I described below, as opposed to eliminating all SMS functionality from your account entirely.

Thanks. But telling me spam doesn't come in by texting doesn't help. It did. ;o)
I have the unlimited internet, 700 minute plan for both phones with the AKO/Army discount. I pay about $130 for the two phones (well, did until they worked their magic. No idea what I'll pay now.)
One is 3G and one 3Gs.

By the way, after AT&T did whatever they did to "fix" my account I no longer have an "s" on the 3GS phone. I realize this goes back and forth with Edge and 3G but wasn't there an "s" after the "3G" before? I think it's gone for good now.

But we're digressing from the tech issues. Sorry about that. Any further comments *off* list welcome.

Paul,

There is no reason to believe that upgrading from 3.0 -> 3.1.2
will
"brick" your phone.

For what it's worth, most text message spam comes not via SMS
(text),
but via the email gateway. You can control this by visiting
http://mymessages.wireless.att.com
and selecting:

Block all text messages sent to you as email
Block all multimedia messages sent to you as email

You can also set up an alias and completely disallow messages sent
to
your mobile number. Once this is done, there is no way that anyone

will be able to send spam to your phone.

Having an iPhone with no text (SMS/MMS) capability whatsoever is a

special case, as this is not something typically supported by
AT&T.
For better or worse, having an iPhone plan configured outside of
the
way AT&T normally does it is asking for trouble. I'm not familiar
with
what plans you may have, but any iPhone 3G/3Gs pricing is going to
be
one plan, at one price (minus any discounts, etc., you may be
entitled
to).

I'm still afraid to upgrade from 3.0 for fear of bricking my phones.

By the way, AT&T saved me the trouble of disabling my 3G service
by
disabling it for me by their incompetance. I have texting
disabled
which got "undisabled" when they switched to MMS. I started
getting
spam text messages and called to have it stopped. After Captain

Clueless had me on the phone for over an hour he managed to
disable
not only the texting but all internet for that phone. After
another
hour with another "customer care" specialist I was informed it's

because I'm a faithful customer for over two years (all the
better
to screw you over, my dear) and will have to be changed to a
newer
(costlier...surprise!!) plan for exactly the same
services...except
the one I'm paying extra for being disabled. So my plan had to
be
"grandfathered" in...Meaning no internet on the phone for over a

week (until the 16th) and it will cost more when it is. If they

figure out the right button to push this time without disabling
the
entire phone.

Oh, another helpful person covering the case keeps sending me
emails, but doesn't answer her phone or return calls.

The thing I love about 3G vs EDGE even more than speed is not
hearing
the squawking every time I'm near a speaker. Even "sheilded"
computer
speakers and teleconference systems always gave horrible squawks
if a
call was coming in, or sometimes just because. 3G eliminated that
for
me.

me using the Edge network instead of the 3G network really
solved the
problems I was having.

Of course. HSDPA radios draw more power than EDGE radios.
Always
been
true, probably always will be true.

Slower, though. :)
