Leoaprd Mail.app and Entourage 2008 use the Exchange WebDAV interface.
While this is also HTTP, it's not a WS-* protocol like Exchange Web
Services (EWS) so it doesn't get the 'web service' moniker.
EWS is 'native' because MS says it is. In fact, the Exchange product
team calls everything *but* EWS (including MAPI) 'legacy.' Tells you
where they're headed, neh?
We'll see what Outlook 2010 brings to the table. I'll wager it'll be
EWS too.
