I don't think anyone from Microsoft ever said you will see native MAPI. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I've always heard from MS that MAPI is going away, and the future of Exchange is WS, not MAPI. I've had engineers and product managers look me in the eye and say "There will never be a Mac MAPI client". My take from the "Mac Outlook in 2010" announcement was that they can finally do a "full" client with EWS.

Outlook access Exchange via MAPI and Snow Leopard Mail integrates with Exchange using Exchange Web Service (EWS). EWS is the next best thing but you will see native MAPI in Outlook for Mac in 2010. :(
