Like it or not, some of their points are valid.
I agree. There are areas that, for whatever reason, using Windows and Office for Windows is just easier. For example, while I love and use Keynote, I still prefer Word over Pages, and my wife has Windows installed in VMWare for one particular application. However Microsoft's arguments are getting weaker every year.
What is your take on this ?
By Microsoft putting this out, they are implicitly acknowledging the Mac OS has become a real and increasing threat. Microsoft doesn't really have a strong argument against buying a Mac computer -- after all, you *can* put Windows on a Mac. They really just want you buying a PC other than a Mac so you aren't exposed to Mac OS at all. After all, Microsoft actually makes more money if you buy a Mac and put Windows on it than if you buy a Dell with Windows pre-installed. They just don't want customers to get a taste of Mac OS.
But more importantly, Microsoft has a trending problem. It has ridden the twin horses of Windows and Office for 15+ years, and they have had great difficulty showing they can be profitable in any other market -- tablets, phones, MP3 players, search. Even the XBox, which is cited as one of their few success stories, has lost the company billions of dollars over the years.
I also think Google is a much bigger threat to Microsoft. The Windows 7 mobile business strategy (build an OS and let other vendors make the phones) is exactly the same as Android -- and Android has a huge head start and it is cheaper to the manufacturers. Already many of Microsoft's traditional hardware partners are going Android. You can easily see this moving to tablets (within months) and eventually to laptops and desktops.
Windows business model? In trouble 3-5 years down the road.
Add in Google Docs and similar online solutions by others and iWork (which is good enough for most people), mix in improvements over the next 3 years, and it is hard to figure out the real strength of Office.
Office business model? In trouble 3-5 years down the road.
This web site is an effort by Microsoft to spread Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt in an effort to prevent its current customers from looking at an alternative operating system. Microsoft really hasn't been able to open new markets, so they need to hold onto their current customers and keep them upgrading.
