[Fed-Talk] Encryption of OS X

Quick question for the list:

What encryption methods does everyone recommend for OS X.  It seems that adding a firmware pass followed by using FileVault should work.  Does Time Machine work with FileVault now?

Last time I used my organizations firmware software, it caused an absolutely unacceptable decrease in performance (unusable).  This laptop did not have any PHI data on it or classified information so I managed to get an exemption back then, but they are attempting to force everyone to use encryption now.  Is anyone using PGP?  How does it perform?
