Convertible tablets keep getting made and keep failing to sell beyond a very specific and narrow niche because they're not very good tablets (heavier, thicker, and less portable) and tend to be poor laptops (more expensive, less robust). The design alsp requires a doubling up on certain components--e.g., the touchscreen *and* a mousepad--because the form factor for interaction with the system in either modes is so radically different. The point re: vertical touchscreens is very well taken; it's fine for a five-minute interaction at a kiosk, but spending hours per day with one is an exercise in pain.
