I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees trouble coming with more and more
stuff moving to a cloud/streaming architecture, yet the pipe providers (both
wireless and wired) are moving in the opposite direction by limiting data
use via usage caps.
People have been complaining about "phantom data use" showing up on their
bills (whether it's a real issue or not is another discussion) ever since
the iPhone launched. Now with iCloud and iOS 5 automatically syncing music
and photos over the air, I suspect we'll see even more of these kinds of
complaints.
For the last few years people have been predicting the death of movies on
optical media in favor of streaming. I think the biggest risk to that is the
broadband providers capping data usage. If it becomes prevalent, I wouldn't
be surprised to see Netflix's primary business model shift back to discs in
the mail and they'll be glad they decided not to spin it off into Qwikster
after all.
All this makes me more comfortable in my decision last week when ordering
the iPhone 4S to keep my unlimited data plan rather than switch to DataPro
and save $5/month. People say to just use wifi instead, well that's only
good until AT&T gets around to rolling out the U-Verse Internet caps the
talked about a few months back.
BTW, no problems with the iOS 5 update for me. Interesting to note that it
took longer for my iPhone 3GS to complete the "restoring apps" phase from my
Power Mac G5 than it took for the entire upgrade process to complete my
fiancée's iPad 2 from her Windows 7 laptop. I assume it's a combination of
faster processors in the iPad and laptop and fewer apps on the iPad.
