- Thread-topic: iPhone ip address?
As part of an iOS pilot program I was messing around with the F5 edge client yesterday. Trying to troubleshoot a VPN issue, I downloaded "Free IP Address". This app shows me both my "Global IP Address" (i.e., my NAT'd IP, which shows up when I go to www.findmyip.com) as well as my "Local IP Address", which I'm assuming to be the IP I get on my local network (i.e. behind my home router).
The Global IP address is correct, and checks against www.findmyip.com, and the Local IP comes to 10.242.122.23, which I thought was a little odd, since I'm doing internet sharing through a desktop Mac, so expected 10.0.x.x. I turned WiFi off, going only through 3G, and retained the same Local IP (though the Global did change, and I confirmed working network connectivity).
Thinking this odd, I turned the phone off and back on. This time, I got 10.242.186.89 as my Local IP. The same /16 subnet, but this time I'm not attached to the Mac. So for fun, I went home, where my house network is 192.168.0.x. Again, the Global address is correct, but I'm still showing a 10.242.x.x address for the Local IP. If I go into Settings -> WiFi and look at my connection, it shows a 192.168.0.x address assigned by my dhcp server, so now I'm really confused! Incidentally, I downloaded another IP address checker program, which gives me the same results as the first, so I don't believe the local IP is in error.
I guess my question is... What's going on here? What is this 10.x.x.x address, and where's it coming from, because I think, in the end, that's what's screwing with my VPN connection (the remote end is 10.0.0.0/8 so I think the routing's hosed).
Any insight into this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony Andreoli
