a while back i asked if anyone was using 3rd party wifi adapters for a Mac - didn't get much response. We have been testing a couple for a while and the conclusions are:
Tested on a MBP17" (2012 model) with electrically disabled internal WiFi.
1) RALINK RTUSB D2870 based USB WiFi Adapters (we were testing the Newer Technology 802.11n adapter). Awesome range, better than native Apple WiFi. Excellent performance, though not as good as native Apple WiFi. Biggest problem has been the driver software was VERY buggy and adding additional network associations after the first rarely worked (usually crashing the driver). Since driver version 4.0.8 this appears to be mostly fixed but its definitely not where it should be (crashes and failed associations due still occur occasionally). The newer tech adapter sticks out about 2 inches so it can be bit unwieldy and easy to break (i'm on my 2nd one)
2) Edimax EW-7811Un - works great. auto-reconnects fine on reboot, multiple associations works fine. performance is ok, but not has good as native Apple WiFi nor RALINK. Range is moderate - probably due to the very tiny size. Software is quite a bit more stable than RALINK. Uses the RealTek cheapset (RTL8192C). It sticks out slightly more than a 1/4 inch (similar to the new Microsoft mouse adapters) so breakage isn't really a problem
