I asked a few months back I asked whether it was possible in Tiger
to register protocols, so that the Finder 'connect to server'

that the NDA has been lifted, does anyone know whether this has
changed in Leopard?
A lot of the mechanics described in Q&A 1387 has changed in 10.5
but, alas, the final conclusion has not. It is still not possible
for a third party VFS plug-in to integrate with either manual
mounting (the Connect to Server dialog) or browsing (now in the
Finder's side bar). I will update Q&A 1387 at some point, but right
now I've got many other Leopard fish to fry!

If you can get me information about why and where you want to
integrate (either post it or, if privacy is a concern, email it to
me directly), I will add your details to the appropriate bugs.
I use MacFuse to mount ssh volumes. Currently a separate application,
such as MacFusion, is needed to provide the necessary GUI to mount
such a volume. If there was a way to allow the Finder to delegate
mounting of other protocol handlers to another application, it would
help make things more transparent, from a user perspective.
It should also be noted that while ssh is my primary concern, MacFuse
can be extended to support other network file systems, so if there was
a way to make this simpler, with regards to the Finder this would
certainly be nice.
To go one step further it would also be handy if other device networks
could be integrated into the network browsing view of the Finder. For
example to list ssh shares that are currently being advertised via
Bonjour.
