I want to detect a GPT disk with an MBR rather than a PMBR.
Alternatively, I would like to know if there is a way to install a
helper partition on a disk that has a MBR.

Can you be more specific about what you're looking to do? Do would want
to detect a Windows install? What about a Linux install? What about
Windows optical install media? What about Windows on a FW drive that
isn't bootable? What about Windows on an internal disk on an original
Intel iMac that doesn't have the Boot Camp Firmware update?

This needs to be something a non admin user can run.
