Hi Quinn,

Thanks for the info, let me address each point in turn.

A) Given the QA note, it seems the short answer here is "not possible"
B) Ditto

However, given the nature of our clustered filesystem, neither is actually applicable anyway (the cluster must be joined first, and volumes are mounted as part of that process, so more push, than the typical pull system for network mounts -- not to mention the server is irrelevant!).

So that leaves C, which is really what I am interested in.

If I set VFC_VFSLOCALARGS (and hence the filesystem is mounted with MNT_LOCAL) then the volumes are shown under devices as per a local disk.

If I do not set VFC_VFSLOCALARGS (ie no MNT_LOCAL) then the volumes are not shown in a Finder sidebar window at all.

In both situations, I do see the devices appear on the desk top, and, if I have "Computer" enabled for the sidebar, I can click on the computer name and see the devices in the main part of the finder window.

I have raised bug id #6068736 about this.

I can, in the mean time, get Finder to treat the filesystem as a local one... but that doesn't seem like a good solution (not that "network" filesystem is very accurate either).

Thanks for your help

Nick

Is that even possible?

There are three aspects to this whole issue:

A. integrating with "Connect to Server"

B. browsing for a volume to mount

C. showing existing mounts

A and B are covered by QA1387. While that Q&A is somewhat out-of-date, its conclusions are still accurate.

<http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2004/qa1387.html>

It's possible that we'll see some movement on A in the near future. B, OTOH, is unlikely to happen any time soon.

C is an issue that's new in 10.5. I'm of the impression that there's no way to do this, but I did some research today and I couldn't find anything to /prove/ that. That leaves you with a couple of options:

i) If you'd like to open a DTS tech support incident, I can research this in depth.

<http://developer.apple.com/technicalsupport/index.html>

ii) If not, I recommend that you file a bug about this. Also, please email me the bug number.

btw Does your volume show up on the desktop (once you check "Connected servers" in the General tab of Finder Preferences)?
