Hmm, I finally found a solution to what I was trying to do, and it did involve using an applescript to send the finder an update message (as well as some other stuff), thanks for the help!

IIRC there is an AppleEvent you can send the Finder to do this. Check the Finder's scripting dictionary — you can view it in the Script Editor app using the Open Dictionary command.
