Please go through spotlight for now.
You're correct that it's more prominent but note that it only works on HFS (as far as Apple-shipping filesystems are concerned). Spotlight has the correct logic to identify filesystems that support it vs. those that don't. To support it in a broad fashion required bigger infrastructure changes than we were prepared to make in Lion.
