Apparently the Apple forums are littered with users having this problem starting with 10.7.5 and 10.8.2. One reports Bug ID 12355407 as having been filed.

My estimated index time for a volume after using "mdutil -E /" is now two weeks. People on forums are reporting estimated times in months or years. Something's broken.
