If you are using Info.plist flag "IFPkgHideSubpackages" be aware that it doesn't work quite the way you expect. It will not hide the packages in the custom view of packages just "one down" from the metapackage.
As a crufty workaround, you can make a hider mpkg, and put the packages "inside" THAT, so when the user switches to custom install, they see only one checkbox, not a bunch of them.
If you are installing only on 10.4 or later, use the distribution script to do what you want, using the "visible" flags for line items. They work well.
If this isn't helpful enough, please supply more details.
