Upgrading pre-installed software

We have made a metapackage installer that checks for a previous version of our software. On upgrading the software, the metapackage recognizes that a previous version has been installed and changes the "Install" button to say Upgrade. The problem however is if the user clicks Customize to see a list of packages.
Because not all of software the in each of the individual packages have been upgraded, some of the packages under the action column say upgrade and the file size is 0 bytes, but there is still a check mark next to them.
How can I not have a check mark next to a package within a metapackge when doing the upgrade if that specific software does not need to be upgraded. Basically I want the software to skip over that package if it is up to date.
Thank you in advance,
