[slightly OT] uniquely identifying a computer

Hi,

Apologies if this is a little off topic for this list, but hopefully someone can help me. During my installation, I want to get a SN from the user and some other unique identifying characteristics of the machine. I need some advice on which characteristics would be good to use and how to obtain them -- every search I do seems to turn up a decade-old tech note (TN 1103) but I'm having trouble finding anything current. Does anyone know if there is an updated version of this document, or if there's somewhere else I should be looking?

TIA,
Chad
