AFAIK, that is still the way to go.
Especially the "Caveats for using the serial number" are very true
("It is possible for a system to lose its serial number"), and the
statement "The Ethernet MAC ... is the closest fit to these
requirements available on Macintosh computers" is still accurate.
Read the caveats on the MAC address, ,too

Hi,
Apologies if this is a little off topic for this list, but
hopefully someone can help me. During my installation, I want to
get a SN from the user and some other unique identifying
characteristics of the machine. I need some advice on which
characteristics would be good to use and how to obtain them --
every search I do seems to turn up a decade-old tech note (TN 1103)
but I'm having trouble finding anything current. Does anyone know
if there is an updated version of this document, or if there's
somewhere else I should be looking?
TIA,
Chad
