FYI, the reason I brought the point up of not knowing the original path was because of an Installer bug with plugins & FileVaulted volumes(it's been reported as 5833000 on BugReporter). FileVault isn't super common but if you double click on a package located in a FileVaulted home directory, and the package has plugins, installation won't complete. Unfortunately all the user gets is a dialog indicating "Please insert volume named '<username>' to continue" after the installation phase is done, and they have to force quit the installer.
The reason I can't detect this from a plugin is because of the fact that the package is copied to /tmp, so I can't get the path of the original package from a plugin.
