Thanks for the useful input. I will experiment with building my image on Leopard and Tiger to see if it makes a difference. I also liked the suggestion to dot files instead of hidden attributes to hide the graphic file in the DMG.
I think the bless step is only useful if you are building a bootable image but I was desperate so I followed some instructions I received from another source, verbatim.
