I second the use of policy based software distribution. I use my own
software to distribute packages based on machine group associations. I
believe this is similar to Munki. The other option would be the Casper
Suite, which I can highly recommend. It covers every aspect of client
management, but does require a license.

Steve, how many Macs are you looking at managing?
