For some reasons (such as the key being compromised or a change in affiliation) at some point a certificate may be revoked. If such a case should arise, the certificate would become invalid. Still, numeric content signed with the now revoked certificate will still be available on the internet. And still appear valid, unless you have a way to know that the certificate has been revoked. CRLs (Certificate Revocation Lists) play this role. Your computer *can* check them (available online), thought it is not mandatory) to ensure that some certificate is still valid.
