Hi Conor,

The idea is to be able to update different modules of the system without downloading everything again. So, if only one module is changed, just that module will be downloaded and updated.

Save bandwidth is a requirement in my case.

While packages can certainly call hosted components via URL, I'm hard pressed to think of a use case where that is actually all that useful. Yes, versioning comes to mind, but for the effort to go through to maintain a hosted payload, why not modify the distribution?  I guess I'm trying to ask more about your particular goal rather trying to advise on the end process.

If you used an Installer plugin to download the additional packages, be aware then that your package would not work via a command-line install, as Installer plugins are skipped.

I was thinking of downloading the packages in a temporary folder, like /tmp/packages, having the distribution pointing to that path.
The plugin would download the packages to /tmp/packages before the step of installing them.
Not sure if that is possible.

Problem ID 13180083. It was actually filed in February 2013. So not a year ago.

The distribution would not be aware of your package then. The download
works fine, it's just the progress indicator that is buggy.
