LZMA support in flat packages?

Say you have an installer package that will be downloaded millions of times and you'd like to make sure that the installer is as small as possible to save on bandwidth costs, would it be possible to have the package payload compressed with LZMA and still be installed correctly on 10.6+? LZMA is supported both by xar, which is responsible for the pkg file format, and by cpio, which compresses the Payload.
