I see in the Advanced Client documentation that the module used to
convert from TPI to a DLPI ethernet driver is tpi8022x. Is it reasonable
to assume that one could push this module between a custom TPI module
(for example, a PPPoE pseudo-serial driver) and the ethernet driver, and
let him take care of the protocol conversion - or is this a pipe dream?
Probably a pipe dream. As its name suggests, "tpi8022x" is specially
designed to support OT Ethernet raw endpoints on top of 802.2
drivers. It contains special case code to handle all sorts of fun
Ethernet stuff, and isn't a general purpose solution.
