merging resource/data fork???

Hi,
I want to transfer the files over the network, and as the resource fork gets
lost on the network. Also i need to compress those files. How do I achieve
the same programatically? should I merge the resource fork and data fork
into data fork and then compress and then send it over network? if so how
will I able to merge the data fork and the resource fork. code snippet will
be helpful.
Any help in this regard is helpful.
