It works fine. I created 16 sets, and dynamically built the menu during
the kEventMenuOpening Carbon Event. There was no noticeable speed hit
with 16 sets. I have a G4 733 but considering the average case is 2
network sets, I'm not too concerned about speed hits. It's a shame
there's no easy way to do it, but thankfully this isn't much harder.
