I think Apple released a KB article this week indicating some Macs
require the upstream ethernet device to be auto-negotiating, otherwise
slow downs or other bad things may result. Try looking at the recent KB
articles for more info.
As the other posters suggested, placing a good quality hub or switch
between the Mac and the router might solve this (maybe your router does
not have auto-negotiating 10/100 ports).
Good luck!

I have a problem that I need help with. I have an iMac G4
700 on my LAN connected to a Netgear RT314 gateway router and
the connection to other computers on the Ethernet and to the
Internet are very, very slow and sometimes don't work at
all. When I ping the router I get a good response. When I
ping www.microsoft.com I get no response. When I ping
www.apple.com I get a response with a lot of latency.
The router is connected to a Motorola Surfboard cable modem.
I have 3 other PCs on the network and traffic between them
and out through the WAN to the Internet is superb.
When I connect the SB Modem directly to the iMac I get great
speed to the Internet. I read about this problem on another
board and someone suggested a solution by turning off sleep
mode. I tried this and it worked the first time even with
the iMac connected to the router. Speed increased also over
the LAN to the PCs.
But...(and there always is)... after rebooting this morning
the iMac was back to sluggish performance.
Has anyone else experienced this? I'm running OS 10.2.1.
Does anyone have a similar configuration but with a different
router? I have the latest firmware in the Netgear router. I
believe without looking it is v3.25.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
