Depends on whether you're 8100 was running OT or MacTCP. [Of course Mac OS 8 could only run OT, but I'm guessing that you're use of the term "OS 8" is a generic "something prior to X" rather than a specific system version.] OT has always torn down all TCP/IP connections when the modem disconnects. MacTCP didn't do that, so if you reconnect and get the same IP address, your transfer would resume.
