AOL port blocking
AOL port blocking

I've had a flurry of reports in the last couple weeks from AOL users
who can't FTP unless they enable passive mode (PASV). I reproduced
the problem with a couple of versions of Fetch and a copy of
Anarchie, using AOL 5.0 on Mac OS 9 (some users reported using AOL
4.0). The data connection from the server never makes it back to the
FTP client:
PORT 172,149,100,86,192,145
200 PORT Command successful.
LIST
550 Cannot connect to 172.149.100.86:49297 - Operation timed out
AOL is not being very helpful -- they say they don't support 3rd
party software. So I'm wondering about other ways to investigate
this sort of problem. Port scanners let you find out what ports are
accepting connections, but is there a tool that would make it easier
to see what ports are being blocked somewhere between two machines?
Thanks for any suggestions,
