There are a couple of workarounds you might try.
1. use the "Simple" routines -- I believe that the progress dialog
works for these routines.

More seriously if that download feature was a core feature in my
application then I would most certainly do that. Here it's only about a
few users downloading a new version once or twice a year - so I will
just tell them the truth: lack of progress display during the downlaod
is a bug in MacOS X.
