Browser resource usage

  • Subject: Browser resource usage

Sorry if this is off topic, but I thought you guys would best be able to answer my question. Can anyone explain why browsers such as Explorer and Safari consume such a lot of VM? I've noticed the OS gets hellishly sluggish after a while, with lots of thrashing.

I have just copied the following from top:

471 Safari 2.5% 41:38.53 20 644 1580 63.4M 22.7M 46.7M 472M

Why on earth does Safari need 472M of address space? Or is this down to Java?

This is isn't simply down to Safari - I had the same problem with IE before that and hoped Safari would fix it. Sometimes quitting/relaunching improves things for a while, other times it seems I have to restart the OS. I'm running Jaguar 10.2.3.

Tom
