Yes that is an option, but you have to leave a machine on all the time,
which to a home users isn't option I would say. Especially you would have to
disable sleep.

As the Apple base station has a USB port, surely it should be firmware
software.
Why I ask, as I work for British Telecom, as we would like to get some
software within the base-station so we can support Apple products better.
Not just for this, but also network configuration similar to AOL
configuration.
