I've seen this question before, but have never seen an answer.
I have a driver (based on IOEthernetController) for USB ethernet
adapter, .
Is there any way to change default name for new Etherenet interface
("Ethernet
adaptor (en#)") in System Preferences/Network panel?
I believe that this information is fished directly out of the registry
by the Prefs panel. Someone more in touch may be able to say more
definitively, but my guess is that:
- this is determined what the driver provides during registration with
IOKit
- if the name doesn't match what the Prefs panel is looking for, your
device won't
show up (Network Prefs is still kind of Draconian).
I know that it can be edited in
/var/db/SystemConfiguration/preferences.xml,
but this has couple of issues:
- It can only be changed from application, driver itself can't modify
it.
- New record in preferences.xml is created only after user opens "System
Preferences/Network" and clicks "Apply changes"
I'm not sure what you intend by the above. Are these observations? In
what way are they issues? What you say is true, but what does it have
to do with your original question?

Justin
